I don't think that many folks will argue that oil is not plentiful. Everything that I have read suggests that there is plenty of oil left. The issue is that most of cheap, easy to extract oil is drying up as suggested by the lack of discoveries of giant and super giant oil fields. The extraction of unconventional oil (deep water, like the one in the gulf that just went up in flames, oil sands, oil shale) is more costly. The question is what do we do when it takes the equivalent of one barrel of oil to extract/refine one barrel of oil from unconventional sources.

There is and there isn't, our best bet is to look for it in place's that had swamps long ago. As these are place's that turn into oil fields, it will be interesting to see how many are in the pacific, if any.
