In all of their discussions, they talk about the 12, and the fact that there are only 11 left. But no one mentions that there were really 13 to begin with, if you include Fanning, subject Zero.
Does anyone else remember them mentioning Zero at some point? I would have thought Lear would have told Lacey after living together for 50 years, or that Amy would feel him. But he's kind of slipped out of the picture.
I'd guess that after they find and defeat the 11, that Zero will be their final confrontation.
May the road gangs never meet you. May the wind be fallout-free. May the sun shine through the ashes, hot rain not fall on thee. And until we meet again, may no one hold your flesh in the palm of their hand.
I also agree that Zero is being setup as the main antagonist of this whole thing. It seems that while the 12 infect and control their "Many," Zero may control the 12 without directly infecting anyone himself.
Then again, Fanning was a professor I believe at the beginning of the book - not a death row inmate.
