I just put a good on on layaway. It comes with a bipod, case, scope mount, scope, and scope rings. I got it for 475$. When I finally get it I'll take some pics to show everyone.

Russians are good ones, and collectable. If you modify it with a bunch of Tapco garbage I'll kick your ass. You really should join SKSboards.com - I've been a member there since 2000 or so. Unfortunately I no longer have any SKS's - when I was unemployed they had to be sold, but I had a Russian, a really nice Yugo with red dot, and a Chicom 'M' model (takes AK mags.) it really bums me out that I don't have at least one left. The SKS is one of the simplest and most reliable weapons you will ever own. Just make sure the bolt is free of cosmoline or the firing pin can jam in place causing it to go FA or worse, fire out of battery.

FWIW Russians were only built for 5 years IIRC and are far less prevalent than people think. China made trillions of them - the Russians, not so much. I'm glad you are getting it - it is a VERY good choice for Kalifornia.

Oh, and make damn sure it comes with the original receiver cover and bayonet!!! The scopes that mount on the receiver cover DO NOT hold zero, no matter what the guy says. I had a scoutscope.com mount on mine however and it worked great. The SKS really doesn't need a scope - I'd go with Mojo rear sights and a Firesight front. Anyway, I miss my Yugo a lot. It was a hell of a weapon, and beautiful wood on it. I think I have an SKS stripper clip bandolier somewhere - I'll look and add it to the package.

The original owner apparently bought it in the 90's so that may explain how he got it. I was planning to put a side folding stock on it so it would be more compact so I can use it as a bugout gun. Also man I'll see if I am allowed to give my discount for FedEx to you to help with the cost. I'm gonna buy a bunch of stripper clips to, I already bought some for my mosin and some for my future ar. And the scope is a receiver mount one, I may just look into buying a peep rear sight. The bayonet is a blade one, so I'm pretty sure it's original. It's all likely original if the guy bought it in the 90's. But now I do have some continuity for ammo now because my friend has a ak-74 in x39.

He already bought a SMLE with a synthetic stock. I still want to slug him in the dome for that.

Just saw this thread - good pick. SKS rifles are durable, fairly accurate, use a common cartridge, and will run without a hiccup in damn near any conditions.

I have a Yugo SKS that's bone stock right now, but I have a 6x32 scope and mount for it, whenever I feel like swapping it back on and re-zeroing. I had a Dragunov stock but I sold it, and I intend on getting a T6 stock in a multicam finish.

That's a nice laminated stock Russian. It's my opinion that you should leave it just as is. Russians are rare, and hard to find with nice laminated furniture in that condition. They've gone up in value a lot in the last several years, but if you bubba it, you'll be sorry eventually. I would consider adding a MOJO or adjustable windage RPK rear sight and then learn to appreciate it for what it is. I you remove the bayonet, keep it in a bag with the screw and don't sell it. I had a Russian, but it wasn't nearly as nice. Just my .02

I plan to keep everything I have for it, along with getting new stocks. The dumbass that owned the rifle before me, TOSSED THE ORIGINAL RECEIVER COVER AND PIN ALONG WITH THE SCREW FOR THE BAYONET!!! so pissed about that. I'm gonna have to get a new pin and screw and I don't even know it the original style pin will work with this receiver cover. I still have no idea as to the year either.

The S/N will give you the year. This is what I'm talking about - usually the year on Russians was on the receiver cover next to a large star - very hard to find an original, correct year cover. I think I still have a blank, likely Chicom cover - next time I go home I'll look. You don't have the receiver cover pin or screw for the bayonet? I think I would have used this as a bargaining point, but oh well.

FWIW the Russians only made the SKS for 5 years IIRC. The good news is, the stock looks VERY nice. Nice laminated stocks are sought after. DO NOT shoot it without the correct receiver pin! Not if you like your teeth the way they are! Seriously, go to sksboards and post pics - I would bet you they can tell you what year it is, and someone there might even have a spare pin and screw you can have or buy cheap. The receiver pin is supposed to be permanently captured so it doesn't get lost. Still a very nice weapon, and it IS possible to find the parts - just not easy. Try sksboards - that is the place to start.

Well the pin in it now is the one that came with the mount. It's held in only by the pressure of the spring. I am thinking about getting a recoil buffer for it as well.

The pressure of the recoil spring? That is NOT right. Do NOT fire the weapon. The cover pin should have a small pad that rotates 90 degrees to come out. It is a very secure arrangement and using anything else other than the correct pin is a danger. Take it back to the gun shop and tell them they sold you a dangerous weapon and DEMAND they get you the correct pin. There is no excuse for that. Also - do you have the original 10 round mag? You will likely have feed issues with that mag.
