Here's a link to a list of items that one website believes will run out rapidly after a catastrophe. As a bonus, there's a small section at the end contributed by someone who survived the civil war in the former Yugoslavia.

The first thing to disappear IMO would be common courtesy. You think shopping at Christmas is bad?

tistine is a troll. No matter what you say, he will find a way to ridicule it. I encourage everyone to simply boycott him. Witness the responses I got from him. He's not worth the effort. |

I am reminded specifically of that winner of a lady who maced a bunch of fellow shoppers on Black Friday so that she could get to some deal before them. It will only magnify hundredfold in a situation of actual emergency.

Interesting stuff at the end there. And it all rings very true, haven gotten myself mixed up in the Yugoslavian conflict as well.
Things like the toliet paper is so so true and also the morale boosting qualities of things like the toileteries and so on. I can remember talking to some female friends who all agreed that would happily forgo several meals in exchange for some lip stick. One of them told me that just the ability to spend some time pampering yourself gave her a chance to feel 'normal' again.
Its that experience that makes me perhaps seem a little harsh on those who seem overly keen on a SHTF senario for real. Having seen a little slice of it I can tell you its not all its cracked up to be.
And it dont smell good either. If you want to know what an apocolypse might smell like then go and set fire to a large rubbish/garabage bin and let it smoulder for several hours. That might give you an idea.
