Never played it before? Lost your copy? Or just want to sign up for free stuff? You can now get the game free from GOG.com.

I registered an account and downloaded it just in case. I might give it a try sometime.

Oh man, Fallout 1 and 2 bring back lots of memories. I played both of them a lot when they were new. But out of the two, I played Fallout 2 the most.

Huh? Didn't I post here already? Anyway, I didn't play it yet, so I used the chance to get it on gog. Even if you already played Fallout 1 - there's the soundtrack and the fallout bible available as well!

I spent a few minutes trying to play it without having read the manual and I was totally lost. Then I actually read the instructions and it got better, so I might keep it up.
But when I get out of the vault cave in the beginning, how do you toggle back and forth between the world map and the detail map?

Enter the red "outside"-zones -> go outside Click on the green circles on the map -> go inside

That was such an awful game. I love the storyline in all Fallouts, but as far as functionality and playability, that game was so gruesome. You couldn't walk more than five spaces without getting into a fight with a radscorpion, everything was measured on AP and was a cross between Overhead-Real-time-Action and Turn-by-Turn-Tactical. I honestly couldn't get through the first few levels because of it, I had to watch the run-through-wal-throughs on youtube just to absorb the story. Seriously, watch them before you play the game/buy the game. You have to be a dedicated Fallout lover or just like awful game mechanics to enjoy this game. Fallout tactics was SLIGHTLY better because of the adjusted gameplay but still so bad. Once Bethesda took over the rights, the game became good. What was it, interplay and black isle studios that owned it first? Yeah, they were terrible.
I guess it hurts me a little more because I actually PAID for the game. -_-"

Haha, yeah. As much as I dislike Bethesda for their "quantity over quality" approach (imho) and their poor quality assurance, I like Fallout 3 / New Vegas far more than Fallout 1 and 2 in terms of playability. I played Fallout 1 until Shady Sands now, and I didn't touch it since then. :/

Exactly, I wasn't saying Bethesda is without their flaws, but the games they shit out every year have a certain amount of re-playability. I think I only did something in Fallout 1 to get something in another game. (Like, a reference.)

I played Fallout as a kid when it was still considered 'new'. When people jump all over the game and express how awful it is in comparison to the new ones, it's like trying to tell me that a Volkswagen Beetle is a crappy car and the Toyota Prius is far superior. There is no comparison because for the most part, there is neither frame of reference nor is there a reason to contrast the two in the first place. I loved the first Fallout games and I like the new ones.
But I digress, I'm not really someone who games for a hobby. My idea of a fun time with a video game is vehicular manslaughter on Grand Theft Auto. Crawling back to my cave now.

I get that.
I hate this game because it's a horrible game. Not because it's any worse than Fallout 3 or NV. It's like the Car analogy you just presented. But more like if FO1 was an 74 Camaro, and the newer Fallouts were a 71 Mustang. They're both fine cars, I just really don't fucking like the Camaro.
I like Camaros, though.

I got your message, loud and clear. Guess it's more the new generation of gamers that I can't stand, who don't really appreciate anything but what's new.
New Camaro or old, though? Hehe.

I gave it a spin again today, although I spent most of the time fixing and tweaking. Part of why I didn't like playing it was that the mouse was so super-sluggy.
So, if anyone is interested: I'm running it with WINE now, setting Winetricks on ddr=gdi, winver=win98, rtlm=readtex and installed vcrun6 to get the Hi-Res Patch installed (get it here). Now I can play it in a nice resolution without a sluggish mouse, but only when I leave it at 8-bit colors. It doesn't get prettier when you turn up the colors, though, so why bother.

Thanks Corny, that's good to know since if I do try it again I'll be running it on Ubuntu 12.10 myself.
