 Fictional and Non-Fictional PA fans.
« Thread Started on Jan 30, 2011, 4:45pm »

It seems that there are two kinds of PA fans on the forums: those who are preparing for an upcoming apocalypse, and those who just enjoy PA as a genre of movies, books and games. Of course, I'm sure there are a few who are in between, but where do you find yourself? Are you a fan of PA in a fictional sense? Or non-fictional?

I would agree, I enjoy the non-fiction as much as the fictional stuff.
non-fiction favorites would be among the 1980's nuke survival guides:

UK
- Survival Handbook; Allaby, Michael
- Survival Option; Tyrrell, Ivan
- Nuclear Survival Handbook;Potkess, Barry
-Protect and Survive
- Nuclear War the Facts; Godwin, Peter

US
Nuclear war survival Skills; Kearny; Cresson H. - the only person to have actually tested these shelters, water and food options, often on himself!

Still looking for copy of "Fighting Chance: Ten Feet to Survival" their website suggests you can download a .djvu version however I only get errors.

I'm definitely more a fan of the genre as fiction. I love reading about the various ways the world and/or civilization could end, but I'd never live though it myself.

For me, I'm one of the "in-betweeners", I started out with an interest in apocalyptic & post-apocalyptic fiction but lately I've changed my view of things.
Having seen the half-arsed attempts by the governments of various countries to deal with disasters, I'm now convinced that I personally need to make my own preparations for dealing with certain situations. I'm not about to run off and join a survivalist group but I'm not going to rely on the government to rescue my arse should something bad happen.

Personally I'm only a fan of the fictional side. I doubt I'd make it through an apocalypse, even with proper training and preparation.

Not with that attitude, you need to have the will to live to make it. That and weapons, weapons will be of some use I think.

I am a fan of the fiction including books, movies, and games.
My favorite PA books include Oryx and Crake, The Stand, and I Am Legend (like the movie too). Favorite movies include 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, and Shaun of the Dead.
I really like The Walking Dead (both the graphic novel and the tv show). I also like the Shadowrun rpg, Warhammer 40k rpg, Left 4 Dead, and Fallout 2.
I love zombies.
While I do not actively stockpile supplies, weapons, etc., I do follow the news... I'm not sure what it would take for me to start stockpiling/holing up/fleeing for less populated areas.

I started out as a fan of PA fiction when I was a kid. It didn't take long though before I started thinking about "real world" survival skills. As it stands now, I've spent over 25 years studying disaster readiness as well as being a voracious reader of PA stories.

Good question, Haz.

I'm a fan of the stories, myself. PA survival is just about the most difficult test a person can undergo, and a fine way to reveal one's true character (and the characters in one's book).

In real life, well, I intend to remain better equipped than the father character was, in THE ROAD.

Strictly a fan of the fictional side of things myself.

All that real survival stuff strikes me as being a tad daft because it seems to be about people primarily wanting to hide themselves away from any other survivors and then being well equipped to shoot them should they venture to close.

That is certainly the way SOME survivalists seem to think.

Here's my take on that line of thinking:

I'm more of a fiction fan. Although it never hurts to be prepared, so I have a few things ready if anything should happen.

Thats an interesting article.

I must admit to feeling a bit guilty about being so 'down' on the whole survialist side of things because its obvious that many people who do take it seriously are also passionate fans of the PA genre but I just feel a tad uneasy about many aspects of it all.

It probably says more about me than those who are involved in it along with a widening gap in the cultural 'norms' between the US and the UK.

And I aint ever really done the country side. Being a city boy born and bred I tend to think that if I can survive a London rush-hour I can survive most things. As long as I have concrete under my feet I should be ok :)
