Interesting article on the old Royal Observer Corp underground bunkers that were dotted around the UK.
They were to be manned in time of crisis and in the event of a nuclear strike on the UK they would be there to moniter fall out patterns and so on.
An interesting slice of British cold-war history. Had a good friend who was part of this set up and they were a solid bunch of people who were, in the main, sort of volunteers.

It would be cool to have a map of all the old bunkers and silos all over the country/ world.
These are the ones I'm closest to (that I know of, at least!) http://www.cromwell-intl.com/travel/uk/dover/ The Cold War areas are not yet open to the public though.
