Hey Hermit, I hope you read Ariel first. If not, stop Elegy Beach and go find it.

Elegy Beach is such that you can read it, without having read Ariel.

I suppose, but you're still missing out on a ton of backstory. Ariel was one of my favorites growing up so it just feels strange for someone to skip it.

I'm bouncing between Down the Road: The fall of Austin and Through Darkest America by Neal Barrett Jr. Down the Road, while being an enjoyable book has some of the most unlikeable characters I've witnessed. I feel nothing for them, because I would rather them just die.
Through Darkest America, I haven't read enough to have a real opinion of yet. But so far, so good. It's set some 150 years or so after WWIII, and America has reverted back to colonial style living. The difference is all livestock are low level intelligence human beings.

One Second After was pretty good. I think it was a fairly realistic depiction of what would happen in that kind of scenario.

I'm reading Public Enemy Zero. The editing is really bad (Ebook), but the book is really enjoyable. The story follows a late night radio host who somehow has contracted a virus that causes anyone within a certain distance to turn into a raging homicidal maniac intent on ripping him apart.
It's kind of a mix of The Fugitive and Hater.

I just finished David Moody's "Autumn", which I liked, and started Patrick D'Orazio's "Comes The Dark". It's off to a really, really great start. After reading Autumn, it's nice to have something that gets off to a quick and bloody start. It takes one sentence for the bat swinging to begin =P

I'm now reading Ex-Heroes. I haven't really gotten far enough in to really pass any kind of judgement, but I am enjoying it.

That's next up on my list too. Hope to start it soon.
edit: Ah, I meant I'm about to read Ex-Patriots, the sequel. Ex-Heroes was great.

There's a sequel... Hmm... Will have to grab that after I've finished this one. It's a great book!

I'm broke. So will have to wait a week before I can buy Ex-Patriots. In the meantime I'm reading some Clark Ashton Smith short stories. His works are similar to H.P. Lovecraft in style, being a mix of weird fiction, SF and horror. He was also a part of Lovercraft's circle of friends.
The man himself was just as interesting as his work. Born to a poor family, he never went to high school, though his did not stop his insatiable yearn of learning as he read (and studied) the dictionary, taught himself French, German and Spanish, and also read a complete collection of encyclopaedias numerous times.
You can find a pile of his short stories here.
