 Waterproof Coats!
« Thread Started on Mar 13, 2011, 6:07am »

I think coats and waterproof clothing would be very useful in a PA world. What do you think?
Does anyone know of any good, waterproof coats that can also be rolled up tightly, (to fit neatly inside a bag, for example).

Thanks for any feedback.

A standard, USGI poncho and liner is a pretty good piece of kit. The liners are the lightest, warmest blanket you'll find. They are amazing. I use mine everyday. Both roll up in very little space, althought a shelter half and some 550 cord makes a much better shelter. As far as clothing goes, Filson is expensive, but lasts forever. Very tough. Their 'tincloth' is amazing - my hat is 11 years old and is like wearing an umbrella. Fantastic gear. I'd like a tincloth coat and a pair of their bibs, but it ain't cheap. It won't fall apart like other raingear under hard use though. In a PA world, I'd want Filson.

ETA: FWIW, Sporstmansguide.com has ponchos with liners for $19.97 - the item # is: B1M-182930

Waterproof trousers, gaiters and a good pair of waterproof, comfortable hiking boots would be good too. The worst thing you would want is to survive the apocalypse and they die because you let the cold and wet get in...

Thanks for the advice. Those ponchos look brilliant and I will definitely look into getting one. But do you know of anything that looks "better"? And by that I mean the sort of coat I could wear to college without getting so many funny stares!
Sure, I could wear the poncho. But I think I'd rather save it for camping trips, etc.

I hope no one minds if I bump this back up. I already have good answers, but more info would be great.

Get a duster if you have the money, don't know if they are waterproof though. I plan on getting a leather duster and having it be my GOOD jacket. When shit hits the fan look for the man in a duster with a Indiana Jones hat on and a Mosin Nagant, ak, and 2 colt peacemakers.

Like I said, Filson makes several jackets in tincloth, like the McKenzie Cruiser, which was designed for the '49'ers. Expensive gear though. I see oilcloth coats in Sportsmansguide.com periodically on sale. Use their search engine and type in oilcloth or Australian and see what you get. IIRC, they were pretty reasonable. Great coats for sure.

A duster would be pretty cool, I'm thinking I'd get one in brown to avoid looking too gothic.
Thanks guys, for the information.

Morg mentioned oilcloth, here's a website for the Australian company called driza-bone (as in 'dry as a bone') who make dusters and jackets in oilcloth. http://www.drizabone.com.au/category/mens-clothing-range/

For that kind of money, I'd rather have a Filson.

The dusters are great coats that will last a hell of a long time but...
They are too damned expensive and they're also quite heavy for their size.

The price on that duster is nothing, I found one for over 800$.

Filson, period. I own their Double Mack, and a tin hat. I can honestly say, with Filson, you buy quality once and it will last a lifetime. I would stick with the Double Mack, some Mackinaw Bibs and their duster. Some of their Shirt-Jac's would be nice too for cooler days.

Down is great for warmth, but once it's wet, it's pretty useless. If you were just out backpacking, Ajungaluk, Western Mountaineering and Feathered Friends gear would get my vote. But I think the backpacking trend in clothing is too strongly towards lightweight performance, to last for any real length of time in a PA world.

Wool, leather, and wax clothing I think will be the best bet. And Filson is the tops with wool and wax clothing. Even woolrich uses an 80/20 blend for most of their wool coats from what I've seen. Filson uses extra long strands of virgin wool that keeps it's strength without having to add in 20% mixes of other non-insulating crap to keep it's strength. Anyway, I'll let you research their claims on their site and do some google searches for customer reviews. I'll just say, from my own experience, they are 100% legit with their claims.

Arc'Teryx makes some bombproof backpacks (I believe they have made packs for the Marines recently, and are also contracting with the government to make hybrid high-end outdoor clothing/combat BDU's. But I question their longevity in a PA environment compared to Filson gear. But I thought I'd throw the name out for you to check out. I'd love to have their Alpha SV jacket, even if it doesn't survive more than a season in the PA.
