 HK 416D .22 LR clone?
« Thread Started on Jun 26, 2012, 6:51pm »

Has anyone checked these out? I've been watching youtube reviews on them (what a damn chore - half the posters on youtube shouldn't be allowed to have sharp utensils at the dinner table let alone a damn video camera.)

Anyway, I am seriously considering this either in pistol or rifle version. For $400-500 it seems like it would be very useful for training as .22LR is so cheap. It also might make a decent 'get home gun' as my M1 carbine is getting worth too much to have sitting here in the house in PHX while I'm gone all day - working on a stash spot for it, but haven't had time to really work on it. If I had a break in and lost it I'd be bummed - a .22 not so much, I'd just buy another one.

Besides training, it would have the utility any .22 has, and I believe after looking at the pistol, that even the rifle has no buffer inside the buffer tube, which means an ACE folding stock adapter would fit, making the thing a lot more compact. I would still have a handgun or two to drop back to, but this thing looks the part, and would be discouraging I believe to 99% of the populace. Anyone look at these yet? Been thinking about shooting more .22 lately because it's so damn cheap.

It isn't something I would be looking at getting personally. I was looking at a ak version myself because it's fairly cheap. If you get a slidefire or bumpski stock I wonder if you could use it on the hk.

That, or the SIG 522. At first these "tacticool" .22s didn't appeal to me, but I'm coming around. They're great for inexpensive training and much more serious in appearance than a 10/22.

Also, we can own and use suppressors in Washington state (after some paperwork and a fee) and those little rifles have threaded barrels.

I don't think a bumpfire stock will work on a .22 from what I've read due to the lack of appreciable recoil impulse. I think they are a huge waste of money frankly, besides being a waste of good ammo. Work on double taps - the only reason FA is used by SF guys is to break contact or provide suppressive fire, something a survivor would rarely need to do, and if you did, semi will put a lot of lead in the air in a hurry. You could buy 1000 rounds of 5.56 for what that stupid thing costs.

Good luck with that. Everything I've read says it doesn't work well - not a surprise. Silly to spend $350 when you could spend it on food and ammo.

Bump-firing severely screws up accuracy as well

It's still silly shit IMO. Terryd - Unfortunately a suppressor won't work without a custom adapter as the barrels on these are actually smaller than they look and what you see at the end is just a shroud ala airsoft. This sucks because since it's not the standard 1/2-28 thread other flash hiders and suppressors will not work. I know people have recut and threaded the GSG MP5 barrels after getting a stamp, but unfortunately it's not as simple as just screwing something else on the end like an AR.

FWIW I picked up a bipod on the AR15 EE for $25 today that I plan on using on my Marlin 989M2. I had a cheap scope laying around doing nothing, so have that mounted, going to throw a picitinny rail on it so I can run the bipod. It's been a cheap, easy, fun project with a an outlay of around $50. Actually $100 I guess if you count the cost of the scope, but I bought that over 2 years ago, so I don't really count it.

I still have plans to finish a dedicated LaFrance replica in .22 LR so I am putting the money I'd spend on this to finish that. Going to pick up a Dremel tomm. to modify the HGs - I'm doing 2 sets, one for me and one for my machinist, who is starting to work again slowly after losing his wife to cancer. I definitely plan to suppress it and it will be an SBR, so that's two friggin' stamps, but what the hell. It'll probably get shot more than all my other AR's together, and it'll have a 'real' barrel so threads aren't an issue. (Barrel on the LaFrance is 8.5" BTW!) I still think the HK416 or SIG would be a hoot - a guy I work with is buying the SIG pistol and I'm tempted to buy the HK pistol - it is just the coolest little toy. Maybe I should build the LaFrance as a pistol and save the stamp money. Got to suppress it though! It looks like this:

That shall be one fun rimfire, surely. Are you sure you don't want to make it selective-fire and go for three stamps?

I've been listening to YouTube vids of suppressed .22s, and the rifles (at subsonic velocities) sound like staple guns.

Must
have
one.

Let us know how the project turns out, eh?

They don't really hand out full auto stamps to people. They can, they just don't, least from what I have heard.

No transferable FA weapons have been made since 1986. Transferable meaning human beings can own them. If you are a class III FFL you can 'own' a 'sample' weapon - they are a lot cheaper than transferable FA's.My buddy has an original 601 (first M16) and a 1950's AR10 that are both selective fire. He paid $13K for one, $14K for theother. Too rich formy blood, but when I go back to visit I plan on taking the LaFrance upper and trying it out on his 601. (grin.)

They're great for inexpensive training and much more serious in appearance than a 10/22.
