So, I've been thinking a registered SHort Barrelled shotgun would be a great thing to have. All you have to do is check out youtube to see what a semi-auto shotgun can do in 10 seconds or less. I'm thinking of a Plain Jane 11-87 modified by a guy on Gunbroker. With the cost of a decent shotgun, the entire cost for the thing will be around $1K - which includes the $200 tax stamp. I am setting up an NFA trust soon to build some SBR's (AR-15's and an M1 Carbine possibly) but I'm thinking this might be my first NFA weapon.
Here's a pic of an 1100 he built. He also installs a choke, extended magazine, sights, rail (if you want it - I have one on the shelf so will likely add one) and cuts the stock to length. I'll post other pics later or a link to the ad. What do you guys think? The addition of a choke makes the thing much more useful than a typical sawed off shotgun.

No, I would just change it out with a pistol grip if I wanted - one bolt. A stock makes it easier to actually hit what you are shooting at. Movies have ruined our concept of what shotguns really are and are not. They kick like a mule for one thing.

So remind us again, a choke kind of keeps the pellets in a small group rather than allowing them to spread out as soon as they leave the barrel?
Exactly. I have no idea how much of a difference it would make, but the only goal I would have for such a weapon is to hold a pattern at 25-50 yds if possible. #4 buckshot would create a great defensive screen. We're talking a lot of lead in the air in seconds. Of course, the truth about shotgun shells being heavy and fairly expensive still applies, but haven't you ever bought something just because you want to try it?
I watched the youtube video of the guy who does this conversion, and although he's a little slow through the course, the gun does it's part. I'm seriously looking at doing this. Found a shotty I like for $400, but am thinking I should be buying ammo or food rather than doing this. Still...

I read an article some years back about shotguns, written by a former US police officer and one line I always remember, he said that he would rather have a shorter barrel than a shorter stock. He was not a fan of the typical folding stocks that were then available for shotguns either. In his opinion, you needed a good solid stock to help your accuracy more than you needed a long barrel.

Everything I've read lately from LEO's is in favor of the 14" barrel because it's so much handier. It's not surprising that with a stock you can actually hit what you are shooting at. FWIW I favor a fixed, A1 length stock on most AR's over a collapsible stock. A shorter stock is handier, but you can go too short. A great tip is, 'youth stocks' which are available for many weapons, bolt on, and are usually cheap. Not cheaper than a hacksaw of course.

Looks like a tear gas /dum-dum /beanbag type weapon to me ("non-lethal") I swear if anyone ever shoots me with a 'non-lethal' weapon, they'd better hope it kills me, because my weapons ARE lethal.
