Some will be unlucky. Others are just stupid
« Thread Started on May 6, 2011, 5:35pm »

It's funny, but my line of work makes me one of those people who responds when 911 is dialed. I am part of those services that would go away if everything fell apart. You have to trust me when I tell you there are people who would die very quickly. You would not believe (or maybe you would) some of the things we get called for. Many of these callers wouldn't have a prayer. Like my subject title states, there would be those who would go because they were unlucky (no matter how competent and well equipped they might be) and then there would be those who would go because ......well just read on.

I've gone on calls where a kid is refusing to do their homework and the parent is befuddled, the power company has turned off the electricity and the homeowner wants it back on and the caller wants somebody to come out and look in their basement because they heard a bump in the night. Now the last one didn't seem so ridiculous until we (three officers) got there and discovered the caller was a rather large/muscular man in his thirties!

I'm 43, 5'6" and balding and I've had great big huge guys run up to me and do their best to get their bulk behind me. I wish I had a camera for those times. It looked like something out of a Police Academy movie.

Actually not that long ago I responded to a caller who was demanding that we take her to the grocery store because her car was inoperative and she is a tax payer. Once I determined that there was no emergency I explained to her that 911 is not for calling a taxi and if she persisted in her behavior (she was drunk) I would arrest her for Misuse of 911. She didn't call back but she called me (and my wife) a couple choice words.

Yes indeed if the system really does fall apart many people are going to die because they're stupid. Probably wouldn't have made it this far except for a little thing called the modern world and the social safety net. Of which I am part of.

That's cool. Reminds me of that section in The Stand that shows various people falling to accidents or idiocy of one sort or another.

Thinning of the gene pool. I'm in favor of it. Remember that football movie 'the program', where some players laid down drunk on the double yellow line in heavy traffic as a hazing? Seem like a good idea? Do it. Please. Do it.

A while back I remember reading a newspaper article about some moron woman who called the police because there was a pigeon in her garden and she was scared of it :P If there isn't one already someone needs to do a book about the ridiculous 911/ 999 calls.

I've gone on calls because the caller has gotten a nasty message on their Facebook page or a mean textmessage or an unflattering Tweet was sent out about them.

The best part is that usually their text/Facebook/whatever history will show they responded, sometimes over a period of days, until they decide they're being harrased and call the cops.

I always tell them to unfriend the person, block their phone number or something. A little common sense is all that I ask. At least seven years olds have an excuse for their behavior. They're seven! What excuse does a twenty-three year old adult have?

For example who here (and be honest ;D) would think to call their local police because they get in a flame war with another member on this or other message boards/forums? ::)Really? I hope not. Please. ;D

You ought to write about this stuff. I think there's a fine non-fiction book idea here.

For my third book, I've begun to plot out some of the side-effects of a great, PA die-off. In the aggregate, a large percentage of assholes and idiots have met their end. Years later, the human condition remains much the same, of course, but the evening news isn't quite as shocking, or as humorous.

With hope I won't be among those that die in the first few waves, now that I got my Marlin I got a small game hunting gun. I should last longer.

I work in the medical field and I agree, some people, without emergency services, cops and other helpers, should just lay down and die. A few years ago a woman was in the waiting room at our clinic and after waiting 7 or 8 minutes got up and started slamming her purse on the counter demanding to see the doctor immediately for an "emergency" due to her having a yeast infection. Hello, walmart has vagisil over the counter fool.

If any of you have the urge to write about such things, you can do so anonymously at a site called "Not Always Right".
True it's generally about customer service but I think even Checkman's stories are appropriate and even if you don't choose to submit anything, you're sure to get at least some laughs from the site.

I will warn you though, it WILL reinforce your belief that "... Others are just stupid". :o

Common sense is not so common.

Generally anyone who's stuck in a phone (not for business, for Facebook, Twitter, games, and other useless crap) for most of their waking day needs to be culled. I have just never met a smart person with 1000 friends and Facebook mobile.

Are you sure you'd want to be alive after something like that?

Of course! Cause I'd be the freaking king! Come in, come in, have some fresh food and water and grab a gun!

Convo between myself and my English teacher.

Well, my Survival Weekly FB profile has over 800 friends and I do have FB mobile on my phone. But, in my defense, I don't usually use the mobile app and the SW FB profile is related to my business, not a personal use account. So, am I at least somewhat smart still? ;)

Checkman, I know what you mean. My day job is working as a PI who specializes in online investigations. I've received countless calls over the last decade from people who want me to track down someone who has somehow offended them on Facebook, Myspace, message boards, or via email. Granted, there is such a thing as cyberstalking and it can be serious. But, most of the time it is just a matter of the persons involved needing to grow up a little.

Heh, not too long ago, received an email from a guy who wanted to hire me to track down someone who was harassing them online. Before I had a chance to respond, got another email from someone else wanting the same thing. Turns out they were looking for each other and were equally at fault for the nonsense....

I find it hysterical that we, as a society, tell our children all these different non-violent tactics to deal with bullying, such as ignoring the name caller. Yet, the same adults spouting off about it are the ones who want to file lawsuits and want the police to arrest people who do the same damn thing....

Yep many people are stupid. We like to joke that they are job security. But there are times when dealing with the idiot brigade can get very tiresome. I just remind myself that I wanted this job. Nobody held a gun to my head.
