Russia almost nuked China in 1969

According to this article, http://pa-ne.ws/65 , the USSR asked us to stay out of the way while they nuked China, but we said that if they did, we'd launch a nuclear attack against the USSR in retaliation.

The claim is unsubstantiated, but if it's true, I think it's pretty interesting that we came that close to war. Things might have been way different if the Russians assumed we would stay neutral and went ahead with their attack without telling us first.

Nuclear war between the US and Russia has almost happened 3 other time that I know of. It's really only a matter of time time it does happen as well.

In the best interest of my country you'd better not nuke them, but invading them is ok, because if there is a war we'll be the first one to be steamrolled by the reds for strategic location.

They were fighting over a few river islands on river Amur. I really doubt that Russians were that serious.
