 Dead Country
« Thread Started on Jan 15, 2011, 8:41am »

For any of you who enjoyed my zombie novel, After the End, I just put up a sequel (of sorts) at Amazonhttp://www.amazon.com/Dead-Country-ebook....5011 053&sr=1-1 and Smashwordshttps://www.smashwords.com/books/view/36503. There's a high romance quotient so for the squeamish among you--beware. But there's also corn harvester usage which is pretty cool. Several of my critics at Amazon mentioned how obvious it was that I don't know NYC. I decided to set Dead Country squarely in the midwest. In fact the burned out house on the cover is a photo I took of an abandoned farmhouse not too far from my house.

Zombie-fighting and romance. There’s room for both in Dead Country. This story is set in the same terrifying world as Bonnie Dee’s After the End, but follows the adventures of new characters.

Brian Pasman is stuck in his hometown of Durbinville, Kansas—again. On the cusp of graduating from Caltech when a family illness brings him home, his life is changed forever by the zombie apocalypse. Several months into the invasion, order is slowly being restored, but this small town is not a priority and the citizens are left to fend for themselves behind a ramshackle barricade.

Into the routine horror of zombie-killing which has become Brian’s life rides a force of change on a Harley. Ashleigh Jennings has been on her own most of her life. She's been a maid, a waitress and an exotic dancer but dreams of a singing career. Her lively personality shakes Brian awake, making him appreciate life more than he had even before the nightmare struck.

The motorcycle group’s arrogant leader clashes with the equally domineering head of the town council, but the two groups must join forces when a new wave of the undead sweeps across the prairie. Can Brian come up with a battle plan to save the town or is his education in probabilities only good in theory?

Hey Bonnie, I just picked up the Smashwords version.

So would you say it has more romance than the first book? I didn't think that one was overly romantic, other than one scene maybe.

I never did put up a real review of After the End so I'll probably re-read that and then get to Dead Country.

heed its call
arm yourselves for times to come
and pray that it will be short

I feel like I spent more time on the relationship in Dead Country. In After the End they were so busy running and figuring out what to do next that I couldn't shoehorn in any more attraction and sex than was there. In Dead Country they have more down time to fool around. Plus Ashleigh is a sassy girl with a healthy libido and the character acted up.

With After the End I was originally focusing it toward a young adult audience so I toned down the sexy parts compared to what I'd normally do. With Dead Country, the meter tipped more in the other direction (although i still cut back on the explicit language, realizing that the horror crowd is not the same as the erotic romance crowd and might not like it).

Anyway, there's still plenty of action stuff too. And boy, did I have a hard time coming up with a battle plan to eliminate the zombies. Strategy is not my strong suit but I slogged my way through it with the helpful advice of friends who know about combines, trucking and controlled burns. Ooh, and a really useful tutorial on how to build a homemade flamethrower. It's evidently much easier than you think. If you go to You Tube you can see people using their homemade throwers.
