While it isn't free, I noticed that Jack London's PA novel The Scarlet Plague e-book is quite cheap on Amazon- around 75p in the UK or $1.10 in the US. I haven't read it yet but I would like to (too bad I don't have a kindle!)

The Scarlet Plague is great. It's basically the grand-daddy of "modern" plague fiction. It's also old enough that it's public domain, so you shouldn't need to pay anything for it.

It's available in a bunch of electronic formats from Project Gutenberg, http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/21970.

Or you can get a free audiobook version of it from Librivox, http://librivox.org/the-scarlet-plague-by-jack-london/

An old guy tells a bunch of younger guys what life was like before the plague that killed everyone and how it happened. It was written in 1912.

Sounds interesting, and since you got me thinking. You wouldn't happen to know about any old west apoc books?

Thank you for the mention of the ScarletPlague audiobook on Librivox.

This was a great story. The protagonists comment around food was the most telling and may still ring true for us:

"A few men got the food for many men. The other men did other things. As you say, I talked. I talked all the time, and for this food was given me-much food, fine food, beautiful food, food that I have not tasted in sixty years and shall never taste again. I sometimes think the most wonderful achievement of our tremendous civilization was food--its inconceivable abundance, its infinite variety, its marvellous delicacy. O my grandsons, life was life in those days, when we had such wonderful things to eat."

People may like this, also on Librivox as an audiobook:

I've never listened to an audiobook before so I might have to give that Scarlet Plague one a go.

Another one you could get for free is Mary Shelley's The Last Man, which is also about a disease wiping out humanity.

And also The Purple Cloud, which is about a toxic cloud of gas- it's a little silly, but free.

And After London

And of course War of the Worlds if you haven't read it already

And three of those (not Purple Cloud) are also available as free audiobooks on Librivox as well.
