Interesting story but take it with a very large pinch (I would suggest shovel full) of salt.

The Daily Mail is a very unpleasant British newspaper that masquerades as the voice of the respectable middle classes. Imagine that old lady who lives on your road and who seems the very image of being prim and proper but who will happily spread the most vicious and untrue gossip she can about anybody and everything. In short a hateful bitch. Thats the Daily Mail.

This is actually pretty serious. There's a real debate going on whether or not to publish the researcher's results. He's from the Netherlands IIRC - heard it on NPR the other day on the drive to work.

Maybe I should not have been so flippant. Think of it as a case of the boy who shouted wolf once to often.

But yes, this does raise some serious questions about whether this research should be published or not. Not sure where I stand. I suppose on the one hand it offers people the chance to see how such a terrible virus might be structured and they can prepare a medical response to it. On the other, some lunatic(s) get their hands on it and we are all in the merde.

My faith in the 'system' has always been very low. However, I would imagine that the primary purpose of something this dangerous is prevention of anything that could possibly hurt mankind in the future. I find it rather alarming that this information has been made public in the first place.

That is pretty freaky. I tend to side with free speech/press more than censorship, but I feel like this is one of those times that it could be a good idea for it to get censored. If theres a risk of endangering millions of people's lives, I think that would take precedence. There aren't enough Jack Bauers in the world to keep the crazies from using it as a weapon.

It certainly does but its not an uncommon theme (scientists cook up a deadly virus and then it gets released) in post-apoc fiction. Where I think the Stand is impressive is the whole coverage that gets given to the attempts to rein it in once the shit hits the fan and the portrayal of the people involved in that.

Always subscribed to the thought that its going to be an 'oops' moment that wipes out humanity than any evil scientist :)

Once people know to look in a certain place, they will look. I think that's what he's talking about. It's just a matter of time. Unfortunately, bioweapons are much cheaper than say, Nukes. If Iran is working on Nukes, then Hamas is definitely working on bioweapons. The US brought Japanese bioweapon experts back to the US after WWII in 'Operation Paperclip'. This is not a new thing. The scary part is, New viruses are hard to defend against unless you already have the antidote/ cure. Welcome to the 21st century.

And worse still, the means exist to genetically tailor a virus to a specific ethnic group. How successful it would be is still (thankfully) unknown but just the idea of it gives me bad vibes.

Oh shit, i really don't like virusses and bacteria.. It would only end up like in 12 Monkeys, really unpleasant... ;) Don't you think terrorism attacks has already been made with the swine flu, bird flu etc?
