A few drops of bleach in the H2O will do wonders for storage - prevents growth of fungus. Great way to purify water if no other way is available. One drop per qt IIRC.

Yup, that's it. You'd be surprised to know that I learned that from my High School US History teacher. He served during the Cold War and has prepped since that period; he told us it only as an example of how some people would prepare for possible nuclear strikes from the Soviets, but I took it to heart and have been doing that since then. As lame as it may sound, it was the most valuable thing I was ever taught in the California Education System.

Not lame at all - you can filter dirty water through an old jean pant leg sewn shut on one end and filled with sand and charcoal, then use bleach as stated. Such a simple thing, but I bet a lot of people in California would go without water in the case of the 'Big One' hitting.

Many people who live in suburban areas or larger cities prepare for nothing and proof is regularly shown through televised news interviews of people who fully expect their county and municipal governments to provide when something goes wrong. These are the very same people who would likely turn to looting and stealing from others.

.5% bleach for consumption of water will kill nearly everything in there after three hours of exposure. As I said in the other thread where I talked about bleach, Clorox generally has about 5.5% actual bleach in it. But can have up to 8.9%, so check the bottle and do the math.

SO just put the water in a clear container like a 2 liter bottle and set it out in the sun for an hour. IIRC it only takes 1/2 an hour or so, but the ultraviolet wavelengths will kill any protozoa living in it. If it makes you feel better, leave it longer. Filter it first of course - sand/charcoal in a pant leg or coffee filters to remove sediment. Doesn't taste like bleach either, and 5% seems high to me. IIRC it's two droppers of bleach per qt.

I prep every day, I take a mental note of all my gear, I look out for things in the stores I'm around to see if there's anything I could add to my bugout gear, I check all the harnesses and straps to make sure nothings broken or loose, I change the water and jerky from the food pack every six months (but it's not entirely necessary), I stretch every morning and night, I keep an eye out for dehydrated food or powders I can add that would make wild game taste better, I make evacuation plans whenever I go out of town, I developed a system of communication and retrieval for me and my group of other survival nuts, I developed my aim, I go to the firing range every three weeks, I get a TB shot every six months, I clean my guns after every range day, I clean the ones I don't fire every two months, I look at new ways of consolidating my gear and balancing it better, I look for better vests or backpacks online every week or so, I take all my gear out to the wilderness to see if I can still wear it and not get fatigued, I keep in touch with all my old survivalist buddies to make sure none of them moved or changed jobs / etc, I work out every two days (muscular and cardio), I get a checkup every six months...
I'm freakin ready. Aside from a bigass, armored, hybrid humvee, with enough corn and potato seeds to restock the Svalbard seed vault, I am %100 confident in my abilities, and the abilities of my partners to make it through any logical apocalyptic scenario. (Except Alien, Robot, Astrological, or otherwise overpowered apocalypse...)

Never say your ready, because no matter what no one ever is ready for every possibility. You should always keep finding new ways to do things, because you may have to use them.

King, no offense, but I think she said she's always doing that. Sounds like she's better prepared than 99% of us. I need to go through my GHB and BoB again and restock food I used up when I was unemployed ( Now there's a SHTF scenario that hits close to home for many people.) I also need to restock my FAK and buy more food and ammo for my BoL. I have been picking up stuff here and there - for example, yesterday I bought a 5 pound bag of Jemimiah's Corn meal. It cost an extra $3.99 on my grocery bill - the kind of thing that is easy to stock up on a little at a time.
The last time I went to Walmart I spotted quarts of 91% alcohol - perfect for my little antique alcohol stove, and I now pick up one every time I go in, as well as another tube of cheap-no name antibiotic 'Neosporin' cream. Bandages are the main thing I need, along with a suture kit to replace one I sold.
I work construction, so I do 'construction yoga' every day, but my cardio is for shit. I leave the house at 4 am and by the time I get home it's over 100 degrees, so going for a run is pretty much out of the question. I'm thinking about buying a treadmill, something I thought I would never do.
I also haven't gone shooting in ages. They closed all the forests due to fire danger, but there is a range close to me that my buddy and I have plans to go to soon. I have a 1911, an M1 carbine with wire collapsible stock and a .22 I recently scoped with me down here, all of which I haven't shot yet. All I really need here I guess is my SIG, and it's been ages since I shot that, but I shoot it so well I'm confident with it. I only brought the other stuff in case I ended up walking to Sedona, but water would be my main problem. The way I would go would be around 150 miles, figure I'd be able to drive at least 50 of that, but what if I couldn't? I clearly have some work to do before I'm as prepared as our new member. BTW - I have a pack for you King, but just haven't had time to ship it. My dog is dying, so my mind has really been on that, plus I work 60 hours a week. hard to get anything done. Today's my day off and I plan on just laying on the couch, reading and drinking beer - might work on the new book a little though.

I have that problem too, it's like, 90+ every day here (In sacramento, where I am temporarily staying for numerous graduation ceremonies) and it's hard to even get up in the morning without breaking a sweat. I've found that (if you're willing to look like a girl) jumping rope a few hundred times helps to develop my calves and stamina for an easy-jogging replacement. However, I shall soon return to my quiet asiantown in san francisco.

My answer is "Yes but I don't have the money to do more". I prepare for the future as well as for any emergency by storing emergency foods at home. But since I don't have the money to store a lot, I also do home canning and use veggies that I freshly harvest from a small vegetable bed I have at my backyard.

I bought some more stuff today, a little can opener/spoon, a magnesium block and flint, a little medical kit in a water tight plastic box, and a little compass/thermostat. Might get this nice little back pack tent I see that they have.
