 Another mode of transportation
« Thread Started on Jan 3, 2011, 5:14pm »

My current selection is in a state of disrepair and rust, but maybe your isnt. I am talking about bikes, the forgotten art!!! I used to be a big bike rider, but then my bike decided it didn't like me anymore showed it by causing physical pain to myself. But I have been thinking about getting my bike fixed up so I can start riding it again, I also have my dads bike but there is a key in the lock for the chain so not gonna be able to ride it. Both are mountain bikes, mines a Schwinn and pretty nice. I plan on after fixing them up then buying a trailer that I can put on the back of my bike with spare tires and inner tubes as well as other supplies. Might be something to look into.

A very good point. My bike is in the same shape - I hope to rebuild it this spring. Don't forget spare tubes, patch kit and a way to change them. You can carry a lot more on a bike - just pushing it like a cart. The North Vietnamese Army moves thousands of tons of supplies down the Ho Chi Minh trail into South Vietnam this way.

You can get trailers for bikes, I have seen some that you put babies in and can ride around like that. They are a little small but are light which is good, I plan on getting a slightly bigger one with a cover so I can put my disaster bins in it as well as other things. I also plan on customizing my bike so its more comfortable and can carry more stuff on the back and in the front.

Bikes are definitely a good move- mine is also sitting forgotten about in my parent's garage, but I don't have any outdoor space where I live now so I wouldn't be able to store it.

The other good thing about bikes- certainly off road bikes, is that once roads become overgrown and blocked by fallen trees etc. bikes are quite nifty for getting about tricky terrain- and of course you don't have to worry about petrol. I've only ever cycled on roads/ grass but I bet being able to do proper mountain biking would be a good skill to have.

Yes, but you will also be able to toss the bike over the fallen tree's as well. You will need to know how to be able to repair the bike as well.

I have a granny trike I picked up a few years back. Note that there are three of us in the family so we will have at least 3 bags when we evacuate. The trike will carry the 3 bags and more. One person can pedal the trike while the 2 others can walk along side to either assist or provide security.

As Morg mentioned, one of the best uses of a bicycle is as a cart of sorts. You can easily transport a couple hundred pounds of gear if you balance the load properly and just push it along.

When my kids were little, we purchased a stroller/trailer to carry them in when we went biking. It easily held two toddlers without a problem. The cool feature is it quickly converts to use as a stroller, with a wide folding handle. It also has a windshield to keep the rain out. We keep it around for potential use in transporting gear.

As far as I know, the Swiss are one of few western peoples that still maintain a good number of bicycles for both military and potential post-nuke use. To my knowledge, those kept in their extensive fallout shelter system are equipped with motors to ease possible EMP issues.

Montague makes an awesome collapsible bike originally designed with the military in mind, and have seen some experimental and possible operational use. Having one of these lightweight puppies available for long distance treks would be sweet. Unfortunately, it lacks the ability to carry much more than the cyclist.

It's a interesting little bike, expensive though. Might as well get a cheaper bike that you can do more with.

I see the benefits of the bike, but there are also obstacles. If the chain breaks, or the tire pops, or any piece of the bike breaks, you must know how to fix it, and have the spare parts for it. After so long you will run out of these, and you never know when or where your bike will break down. In relation to weight and supplies, while you can carry spare parts in the trailer/wagon you pull behind, that is less space to carry something like water or food.

Also, exposed to the elements all the time, it will begin to rust in spaces that you cannot repair, and as with spare parts, you can only have so much steel wool and oil with you (how I remove rust from my bike).

Traveling faster may seem like a good idea too, but when you do, you are more likely to get into trouble. You may ride into an ambush, and before you can dismount and begin shooting back you are surrounded.

So while there is the benefit of traveling fast, it is quickly outweighed by the problems. If you say traveling by foot makes it so you can't carry as much, you can still pull a wagon on foot, and with some ingenuity, such as a rope tied around your waist and attached to the wagon, a lone traveler can pull the wagon and have their weapon at the ready. A group can do the same thing, so if you look at the entire situation, bikes can cause you more harm than good.

Wow. Pretty pessimistic. FWIW I saw a great trailer made from an old shopping cart that was modified and placed on 2 wheels with a tongue added the other day. Wish I'd gotten a closer look, but I was driving. Made me think though.
