 Advice
« Thread Started on Jul 31, 2012, 5:54pm »

I recently found a job in the Bay Area. I work in San Carlos, which is a little south of San Francisco. I live in Concord with a friend; the commute is one-hundred miles altogether and I spend at least four hours on the road every day. I earn ten dollars an hour, which I actually think is fair. My Jeep is shot and repairs are going to be expensive. I owe too much in student loans to bother adding together. My boss has already threatened to fire me if I don't continue to work in excess of twelve hours a day or come in on short work days that aren't worth the drive.

I have two options. I either continue to lose money by paying exorbitant amounts for gas and choose daily between paying off debt or eating, or I tell the lady to bite a curb and move south to try and get a job that's more reasonable.

Any input is welcome.

Can't you sue the bitch? Seems like there are work laws that you could use.

If a job is costing you more than it earns you then its a no brainer to drop it.

Assuming that the student loans are not held by an organisation who will maim you if you dont pay them off on time then I reckon you need to make the move south you have mentioned. Because otherwise it just strikes me that you are digging yourself a bigger hole as things are. Maybe living in the UK I dont understand how the US works but here you only do a 100 mile commute if you are earning a LOT of money. And certainly not for $10 an hour.

At $10/hour, I'm surprised you are even able to put enough gas in the tank to make the trip every day. Cut your losses and head for greener pastures.

Attorneys don't work for free and you'd be hard pressed to find one who would take a case like this on a contingency basis.

I haven't been able to get back on the net until today, because where I'm living (until tomorrow) does not have internet. I have quit and am still waiting for what I'm owed. Thanks for all of your input.

She doesn't owe me enough to make a lawsuit outside of small claims worth my while.

You're certainly correct. It was an act of desperation because employment opportunities out here are absolutely dismal. As a result, I am in about the same place as I was a little over a month ago.

This is exactly why I questioned it in the first place.

If you're in the Bay Area, you might want to check out Task Rabbit to help tide you over until you find a real job.

http://www.taskrabbit.com

It might only get you a few bucks a day, but I do hear about people using the tasks as a full time job.

A little late for that. Drove home this morning. It was astronomically boring. I've got a few leads, however. I appreciate the link.

Best of British. And whilst its no consolation things are equally bleak on this side of the pond as well. Throw in the potentially catostrophic financial shit storm that is brewing with the collapse of the Euro as well and I genuinely think for the next few years we are all looking at some tough times.

Although its all relative. If you have enough food in the house for the next 48 hours, can drink the water out of the tap and have no threat of dieing from hypothermia then everything else is a nice bonus :)

I am assuming you have no better half or little rug-rats to provide for so go and live a little. Just a few risks and if you have to spend a few nights sleeping under the stars, well its character forming !
